All at once, it was six years ago. I knew because it was my and Eric’s first vacation together at that lake house that smelled of salt spray and rosewater, where we’d tried to light the fireplace only to send smoke choking us out of the house. We’d taken a bottle of wine with us to the beach. We’d stripped and slipped under the cover of the lake. We were naked, panting, drunk. In the moonlight, we glowed.

“Ready,” Eric said.

“Set.” My voice was a moan.

Neither one of us said Go. Yet we swam as if running, our breathing rapid-fire. The water made us wild. Clawing. Speeding. So goddamned alive. Hair tangled over my face. I couldn’t see where we were going, but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that he was beside me. I reached forward and Eric’s fingers wrapped around my thigh. I pulled back and my body twisted to face his. We moved together, under the moonlight, our slippery bodies entwined.

Eric’s fingers found their way inside me as I wrapped my legs around him. I felt his breath against me. Ragged. Guttural. Growling even as we bobbed. His mouth filled my mouth. His fingers slipped out of me. His body slipped into me. My back arched. My legs squeezed. Eric kicked to keep us afloat. To keep us from drowning. To keep us this alive.

We flipped onto our backs. Sweat beaded our faces. We drank mouthfuls of silver light. Ripples expanded around us. I took hold of Eric’s hand. I let the others go. I let my parents go. I let my family go. I didn’t need them anymore. Not when I had this.
